Dr. Markus Keller: Cold hardiness and cold damage in grapevines

Dr. Markus Keller, professor of viticulture at Washington State University in Prosser, WA, will be visiting the Finger Lakes region next week. He will be presenting a seminar and speaking with viticulture students at Cornell on Monday, April 6, and has graciously agreed to give a presentation for growers the following day about some of his work on understanding grapevine cold hardiness and preventing winter injury. Dr. Keller and his team have developed a cold hardiness model that is now integrated into Washington's AgWeatherNet weather station network. The model provides the estimated critical low temperature thresholds for bud damage of over 20 wine and juice grape cultivars based on the locally observed temperature for each weather station.
Dr. Keller received his Masters and Ph.D. degrees in Switzerland, and has been a faculty member at Washington State since 2001. He is the author of The Science of Grapevines, a must-have book for anybody who wants to really understand the science behind grapevine growth and physiology. In addition to grapevine cold hardiness, Dr. Keller's research program has also been investigating vine and berry water relations, especially during the time between veraison and harvest.
Dr. Keller's presentation will be on Tuesday, April 7 beginning at 4:30 PM at Three Brothers Wineries and Estates near Geneva.
