Tree-of-Heaven: Identification, Ecological Impacts, Mapping and Management
April 24, 2020On Arbor Day, join Garrett Koplun, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Forester for Region 9 and Laura Bailey, Northwest Regional Director of the Master Forest Owner (MFO) Program for a comprehensive overview of tree-of-heaven. Tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima) is an invasive species that has negative ecological impacts on our forests and is also the preferred tree of the invasive spotted lanternfly (SLF). Knowing how to identify and record locations of tree of heaven in iMapInvasives is a proactive practice that will help identify high priority areas to monitor for and implement management strategies to control anticipated SLF infestations. Another proactive practice landowners can engage in is removal of tree-of-heaven from their property, but effective management of this tree requires specific control practices. Learn more about all of these topics so you can help manage an invasive tree species and be an integral contributor of the early detection and rapid response to SLF.
