Special Seminar: Lessons Learned from the Lodi Rules for Sustainable Winegrowing

Please join us for a presentation by Matthew Hoffman, Grower Program Coordinator for the Lodi Winegrape Commission, about the Lodi grape industry's experience with their sustainability certification program, The Lodi Rules for Sustainable Winegrowing. This program was the first sustainability certification program developed for grape growing in the United States, and has served as a model for a number of other programs that have developed since then, including the VineBalance program here in New York. Dr. Hoffman will talk about some of the pros and cons of creating a third party certification program like the Lodi Rules, and what kinds of impacts the program has had for the industry out there.

Dr. Kees van Leeuwen is a leading viticulture researcher in Bordeaux, and the viticulture consultant for Chateau Cheval Blanc in St. Emilion, one of the premier producers in Bordeaux, which uses a high percentage of Cabernet Franc in its wines. Dr. van Leeuwen has graciously agreed to share his extensive experience working with Cabernet Franc with our industry while he is visiting.

Dr. Glen Creasy, from Lincoln University in New Zealand, will be coming to the area next week and will be presenting a talk for Finger Lakes growers on how to adapt vineyard practices in the face of changing conditions every season in order to produce a profitable and high-quality grape crop. Glen is a native son of the Finger Lakes region, and received his Bachelor's degree from Cornell before moving on to Oregon State University, where he earned his Master's and Ph.D. He has been a faculty member at Lincoln University since 1998.

A pre-conference tour of New York and Pennsylvania vineyards and wineries will take place on Thursday, July 23rd. The conference will begin with technical presentations on July 24th-25th, and will also include Friday's Oenolympics Grazing Dinner with Wines of the East and Saturday's Sparkling Wine Reception and Grand Awards Banquet, when Dr. Wayne Wilcox will receive the Eastern Section's 2015 Outstanding Achievement Award.

Glen is a native son of the Finger Lakes region, and received his Bachelor's degree from Cornell before moving on to Oregon State University, where he earned his Master's and Ph.D. He has been a faculty member at Lincoln University since 1998.

Please join us for a presentation by Matthew Hoffman, Grower Program Coordinator for the Lodi Winegrape Commission, about the Lodi grape industry's experience with their sustainability certification program, The Lodi Rules for Sustainable Winegrowing. This program was the first sustainability certification program developed for grape growing in the United States, and has served as a model for a number of other programs that have developed since then, including the VineBalance program here in New York. Dr. Hoffman will talk about some of the pros and cons of creating a third party certification program like the Lodi Rules, and what kinds of impacts the program has had for the industry out there.

Please join us for a presentation by Matthew Hoffman, Grower Program Coordinator for the Lodi Winegrape Commission, about the Lodi grape industry's experience with their sustainability certification program, The Lodi Rules for Sustainable Winegrowing. This program was the first sustainability certification program developed for grape growing in the United States, and has served as a model for a number of other programs that have developed since then, including the VineBalance program here in New York. Dr. Hoffman will talk about some of the pros and cons of creating a third party certification program like the Lodi Rules, and what kinds of impacts the program has had for the industry out there.

Glen is a native son of the Finger Lakes region, and received his Bachelor's degree from Cornell before moving on to Oregon State University, where he earned his Master's and Ph.D. He has been a faculty member at Lincoln University since 1998.

Northern Grapes Project Results: Fungicide Sensitivity & Vine Nutrition of Cold-Hardy Cultivars

Patricia McManus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Carl Rosen of the University of Minnesota will discuss results of their Northern Grapes Project research. Patty’s presentation will summarize four years of field trials that focused on determining the sensitivity of popular cold-hardy cultivars to fungicides, including copper, sulfur, and difenoconazole. Carl’s presentation will summarize three years of research on tissue analysis of cold hardy grapes grown in 16 locations spanning five states. Nutrient diagnostic criteria will be presented for petiole, blade, and whole leaves collected at bloom and veraison and relationships between soil properties/tissue nutrient concentrations and grape juice quality will be discussed.

Glen is a native son of the Finger Lakes region, and received his Bachelor's degree from Cornell before moving on to Oregon State University, where he earned his Master's and Ph.D. He has been a faculty member at Lincoln University since 1998.

Northern Grapes Project Results: Fungicide Sensitivity & Vine Nutrition of Cold-Hardy Cultivars

Patricia McManus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Carl Rosen of the University of Minnesota will discuss results of their Northern Grapes Project research. Patty’s presentation will summarize four years of field trials that focused on determining the sensitivity of popular cold-hardy cultivars to fungicides, including copper, sulfur, and difenoconazole. Carl’s presentation will summarize three years of research on tissue analysis of cold hardy grapes grown in 16 locations spanning five states. Nutrient diagnostic criteria will be presented for petiole, blade, and whole leaves collected at bloom and veraison and relationships between soil properties/tissue nutrient concentrations and grape juice quality will be discussed.

Dr. Hoffman will talk about some of the pros and cons of creating a third party certification program like the Lodi Rules, and what kinds of impacts the program has had for the industry out there.

Northern Grapes Project Results: Fungicide Sensitivity & Vine Nutrition of Cold-Hardy Cultivars

Patricia McManus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Carl Rosen of the University of Minnesota will discuss results of their Northern Grapes Project research. Patty’s presentation will summarize four years of field trials that focused on determining the sensitivity of popular cold-hardy cultivars to fungicides, including copper, sulfur, and difenoconazole. Carl’s presentation will summarize three years of research on tissue analysis of cold hardy grapes grown in 16 locations spanning five states. Nutrient diagnostic criteria will be presented for petiole, blade, and whole leaves collected at bloom and veraison and relationships between soil properties/tissue nutrient concentrations and grape juice quality will be discussed.

This program was the first sustainability certification program developed for grape growing in the United States, and has served as a model for a number of other programs that have developed since then, including the VineBalance program here in New York. Dr. Hoffman will talk about some of the pros and cons of creating a third party certification program like the Lodi Rules, and what kinds of impacts the program has had for the industry out there.

Please join us for a presentation by Matthew Hoffman, Grower Program Coordinator for the Lodi Winegrape Commission, about the Lodi grape industry's experience with their sustainability certification program, The Lodi Rules for Sustainable Winegrowing. This program was the first sustainability certification program developed for grape growing in the United States, and has served as a model for a number of other programs that have developed since then, including the VineBalance program here in New York. Dr. Hoffman will talk about some of the pros and cons of creating a third party certification program like the Lodi Rules, and what kinds of impacts the program has had for the industry out there.

Northern Grapes Project Results: Fungicide Sensitivity & Vine Nutrition of Cold-Hardy Cultivars

Patricia McManus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Carl Rosen of the University of Minnesota will discuss results of their Northern Grapes Project research. Patty’s presentation will summarize four years of field trials that focused on determining the sensitivity of popular cold-hardy cultivars to fungicides, including copper, sulfur, and difenoconazole. Carl’s presentation will summarize three years of research on tissue analysis of cold hardy grapes grown in 16 locations spanning five states. Nutrient diagnostic criteria will be presented for petiole, blade, and whole leaves collected at bloom and veraison and relationships between soil properties/tissue nutrient concentrations and grape juice quality will be discussed.

Please join us for a presentation by Matthew Hoffman, Grower Program Coordinator for the Lodi Winegrape Commission, about the Lodi grape industry's experience with their sustainability certification program, The Lodi Rules for Sustainable Winegrowing. This program was the first sustainability certification program developed for grape growing in the United States, and has served as a model for a number of other programs that have developed since then, including the VineBalance program here in New York. Dr. Hoffman will talk about some of the pros and cons of creating a third party certification program like the Lodi Rules, and what kinds of impacts the program has had for the industry out there.

Glen is a native son of the Finger Lakes region, and received his Bachelor's degree from Cornell before moving on to Oregon State University, where he earned his Master's and Ph.D. He has been a faculty member at Lincoln University since 1998.

Northern Grapes Project Results: Fungicide Sensitivity & Vine Nutrition of Cold-Hardy Cultivars

Patricia McManus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Carl Rosen of the University of Minnesota will discuss results of their Northern Grapes Project research. Patty’s presentation will summarize four years of field trials that focused on determining the sensitivity of popular cold-hardy cultivars to fungicides, including copper, sulfur, and difenoconazole. Carl’s presentation will summarize three years of research on tissue analysis of cold hardy grapes grown in 16 locations spanning five states. Nutrient diagnostic criteria will be presented for petiole, blade, and whole leaves collected at bloom and veraison and relationships between soil properties/tissue nutrient concentrations and grape juice quality will be discussed.

Please join us for a presentation by Matthew Hoffman, Grower Program Coordinator for the Lodi Winegrape Commission, about the Lodi grape industry's experience with their sustainability certification program, The Lodi Rules for Sustainable Winegrowing. This program was the first sustainability certification program developed for grape growing in the United States, and has served as a model for a number of other programs that have developed since then, including the VineBalance program here in New York. Dr. Hoffman will talk about some of the pros and cons of creating a third party certification program like the Lodi Rules, and what kinds of impacts the program has had for the industry out there.

Northern Grapes Project Results: Fungicide Sensitivity & Vine Nutrition of Cold-Hardy Cultivars

Patricia McManus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Carl Rosen of the University of Minnesota will discuss results of their Northern Grapes Project research. Patty’s presentation will summarize four years of field trials that focused on determining the sensitivity of popular cold-hardy cultivars to fungicides, including copper, sulfur, and difenoconazole. Carl’s presentation will summarize three years of research on tissue analysis of cold hardy grapes grown in 16 locations spanning five states. Nutrient diagnostic criteria will be presented for petiole, blade, and whole leaves collected at bloom and veraison and relationships between soil properties/tissue nutrient concentrations and grape juice quality will be discussed.

Glen is a native son of the Finger Lakes region, and received his Bachelor's degree from Cornell before moving on to Oregon State University, where he earned his Master's and Ph.D. He has been a faculty member at Lincoln University since 1998.

Northern Grapes Project Results: Fungicide Sensitivity & Vine Nutrition of Cold-Hardy Cultivars

Patricia McManus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Carl Rosen of the University of Minnesota will discuss results of their Northern Grapes Project research. Patty’s presentation will summarize four years of field trials that focused on determining the sensitivity of popular cold-hardy cultivars to fungicides, including copper, sulfur, and difenoconazole. Carl’s presentation will summarize three years of research on tissue analysis of cold hardy grapes grown in 16 locations spanning five states. Nutrient diagnostic criteria will be presented for petiole, blade, and whole leaves collected at bloom and veraison and relationships between soil properties/tissue nutrient concentrations and grape juice quality will be discussed.

These changes will affect farms, greenhouses, nurseries, forests, and other establishments (including organic establishments) on which pesticides are used in the production of agricultural crops. If you use, supervise the use, or are responsible for the use of pesticides on such establishments, the Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) invites you to attend a WPS Mock Inspection.

Please join us for a presentation by Matthew Hoffman, Grower Program Coordinator for the Lodi Winegrape Commission, about the Lodi grape industry's experience with their sustainability certification program, The Lodi Rules for Sustainable Winegrowing. This program was the first sustainability certification program developed for grape growing in the United States, and has served as a model for a number of other programs that have developed since then, including the VineBalance program here in New York. Dr. Hoffman will talk about some of the pros and cons of creating a third party certification program like the Lodi Rules, and what kinds of impacts the program has had for the industry out there.

Dr. Glen Creasy, from Lincoln University in New Zealand, will be coming to the area next week and will be presenting a talk for Finger Lakes growers on how to adapt vineyard practices in the face of changing conditions every season in order to produce a profitable and high-quality grape crop. Glen is a native son of the Finger Lakes region, and received his Bachelor's degree from Cornell before moving on to Oregon State University, where he earned his Master's and Ph.D. He has been a faculty member at Lincoln University since 1998.

The 40th ASEV-ES conference will be at the Clarion Hotel Marina and Conference Center in Dunkirk, NY on July 23-25, 2015. A pre-conference tour of New York and Pennsylvania vineyards and wineries will take place on Thursday, July 23rd. The conference will begin with technical presentations on July 24th-25th, and will also include Friday's Oenolympics Grazing Dinner with Wines of the East and Saturday's Sparkling Wine Reception and Grand Awards Banquet, when Dr. Wayne Wilcox will receive the Eastern Section's 2015 Outstanding Achievement Award.

Northern Grapes Project Results: Fungicide Sensitivity & Vine Nutrition of Cold-Hardy Cultivars

Patricia McManus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Carl Rosen of the University of Minnesota will discuss results of their Northern Grapes Project research. Patty’s presentation will summarize four years of field trials that focused on determining the sensitivity of popular cold-hardy cultivars to fungicides, including copper, sulfur, and difenoconazole. Carl’s presentation will summarize three years of research on tissue analysis of cold hardy grapes grown in 16 locations spanning five states. Nutrient diagnostic criteria will be presented for petiole, blade, and whole leaves collected at bloom and veraison and relationships between soil properties/tissue nutrient concentrations and grape juice quality will be discussed.

Changes to Worker-Protection Standards Regulations

A number of significant changes to the federal Worker Protection Standard for Agricultural Pesticides (WPS) will go into effect on January 2, 2017. These changes will affect farms, greenhouses, nurseries, forests, and other establishments (including organic establishments) on which pesticides are used in the production of agricultural crops. If you use, supervise the use, or are responsible for the use of pesticides on such establishments, the Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) invites you to attend a WPS Mock Inspection.
