Please join us for a presentation by Matthew Hoffman, Grower Program Coordinator for the Lodi Winegrape Commission, about the Lodi grape industry's experience with their sustainability certification program, The Lodi Rules for Sustainable Winegrowing. This program was the first sustainability certification program developed for grape growing in the United States, and has served as a model for a number of other programs that have developed since then, including the VineBalance program here in New York. Dr. Hoffman will talk about some of the pros and cons of creating a third party certification program like the Lodi Rules, and what kinds of impacts the program has had for the industry out there.

Dr. Glen Creasy, from Lincoln University in New Zealand, will be coming to the area next week and will be presenting a talk for Finger Lakes growers on how to adapt vineyard practices in the face of changing conditions every season in order to produce a profitable and high-quality grape crop. Glen is a native son of the Finger Lakes region, and received his Bachelor's degree from Cornell before moving on to Oregon State University, where he earned his Master's and Ph.D. He has been a faculty member at Lincoln University since 1998.

Northern Grapes Project Results: Fungicide Sensitivity & Vine Nutrition of Cold-Hardy Cultivars

Patricia McManus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Carl Rosen of the University of Minnesota will discuss results of their Northern Grapes Project research. Patty’s presentation will summarize four years of field trials that focused on determining the sensitivity of popular cold-hardy cultivars to fungicides, including copper, sulfur, and difenoconazole. Carl’s presentation will summarize three years of research on tissue analysis of cold hardy grapes grown in 16 locations spanning five states. Nutrient diagnostic criteria will be presented for petiole, blade, and whole leaves collected at bloom and veraison and relationships between soil properties/tissue nutrient concentrations and grape juice quality will be discussed.

Changes to Worker-Protection Standards Regulations

A number of significant changes to the federal Worker Protection Standard for Agricultural Pesticides (WPS) will go into effect on January 2, 2017. These changes will affect farms, greenhouses, nurseries, forests, and other establishments (including organic establishments) on which pesticides are used in the production of agricultural crops. If you use, supervise the use, or are responsible for the use of pesticides on such establishments, the Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) invites you to attend a WPS Mock Inspection.

Labor Roadshow Will Help Clarify Labor Regulations
A stable, well-trained workforce is the lifeblood of agriculture. The Agriculture Workforce Development Council (AWDC) was formed to raise awareness of on-going labor issues and to bring resources to farm operators so they can adopt best practices. Even well managed operations can struggle with understanding and filtering the multitude of legal and regulatory requirements associated with all aspects of managing a workforce.
AWDC will sponsor the labor roadshow, "Helping Agriculture Employers Stay Current on Employment Rules and Best Practices," at four locations across the state the week of Nov. 15. The full day program is specifically for farm owners and managers to gain tools and information to help their farm business attract and retain skilled workers.

New requirements under the federal Worker Protection Standards (WPS) went into effect this year that impact all farmers. Chris Wainwright, NY Dept of Environmental Conservation, will give a presentation about the new rules, and Dr. David Carlson with Thompson Health will cover the medical exam and respirator fit testing requirements in the WPS rules. Fit testing and medical evaluations will not be provided at this meeting.
There is no cost for the meeting, but registration is required.

Knowing how to identify and record locations of tree of heaven in iMapInvasives is a proactive practice that will help identify high priority areas to monitor for and implement management strategies to control anticipated SLF infestations. Another proactive practice landowners can engage in is removal of tree-of-heaven from their property, but effective management of this tree requires specific control practices. CCE Yates will be offering small classes for those wishing to prepare to take their pesticide applicator exam. The training will cover the safe handling of pesticides, rules and regulations, formulations and much more. This course is not a 30-hour course. EnoCert 101: Intro to Viticulture & Enology

This course will cover the basics of grape growing from the ground up. Through live interactive lectures, participants will understand how vineyard site, climate, and trellising systems impact grape production and quality. Participants will also expand their understanding of production steps for specific wine types. Upon completing this course, attendees will learn how different wine types (white, red, ros?, sparkling) are produced, and the key decisions that need to be made to influence wine style.
